What’s The Value Of Music?

HEADLINE NEWS

The PMA regularly meets with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC to advocate on behalf of our members and we are pleased to let you know of another advancement. On February 10th, the PMA Board had a lunch meeting with the upper management of ASCAP and members of their Board of Directors where we learned of exciting changes that will benefit all of us who make a living composing and publishing instrumental music for television and film. These changes are designed to bring more fairness to the distribution system and to be responsive to changes in the industry.

All Background Performances will now be treated equally. There will no longer be any difference in payment between a Background Vocal and a Background Instrumental performance. Both will be paid as “Background” by ASCAP. Other changes include giving more precise value to the payments for Feature performances based on their duration. These changes will take effect in the June publishers’ and July writers’ distributions for 2012.

At the PMA’s 2nd annual International Meeting, we welcomed 13 foreign publishers and had successful discussions on International issues relating to production music.
